and one would think there would be plenty to say on that subject.,The most obvious topic for this column is the Eagles and their playoff chances

after quarterback Nick Foles’ awful performance during the last two regular season games,That’s because, in case it’s contagious., I’m not exactly brimming with optimism and am wary of spreading skepticism

that kind of news would bother me and make me ask why the Birds don’t get any respect. In this case,Normally, though, those who come up with the betting lines clearly watched the same excruciating games we fans did, where Foles’ play inspired zero confidence.

The Birds are playing at home, and their defense is quite capable of rising to the occasion and taking some of the pressure off of Foles., at least

But Atlanta just scored an impressive 26-13 playoff road win versus the Los Angeles Rams, who’s one of the NFL’s best all-around running backs., so they won’t be intimidated by a boisterous crowd. And they did a great job limiting the high-scoring L.A. offense led by Todd Gurley

in which they frittered away a 25-point lead.,The Falcons also possess more postseason experience than the Birds. I can only imagine how motivated they are to reach the Super Bowl for the second year in a row and erase the shock of last year’s overtime loss to New England

but not surprised.,Can the Eagles beat Atlanta? Sure. Will they? I have no idea. But I won’t be at all surprised if they lose. Disappointed that such a promising season ended abruptly

Police said a Pennsylvania man who was ejected from Saturday's Philadelphia Eagles game assaulted a police horse after leaving the stadium. Taylor Hendricks, was removed from Lincoln Financial Field before the start of the Eagles' NFL playoff game against the Atlanta Falcons by stadium personnel who said he arrived intoxicated and was unable to produce a ticket., 22

The Eagles defeated the Falcons during Saturday's game 15-10, Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings at Lincoln Financial Field.,Authentic Devon Kennard Jersey, and advanced to the Championship game

There wasn't much left for Case Keenum to do but to fling the ball deep and hope for a miracle.

punctuating a steely rally from a 17-point deficit that stood until 1:16 was left in the third quarter.,Drew Brees had driven the Saints in position for Wil Lutz's go-ahead 43-yard field goal with 25 seconds remaining

who rolled awkwardly underneath Diggs during an ill-fated attempt at a tackle.,The Vikings were out of timeouts and nearly out of options when Keenum dropped back with 10 seconds to go from his 39 and threw high into a crowd. Diggs jumped in front of Marcus Williams

"I'm just thankful," Diggs said. "They count us out all the time. Nobody thinking we can do it. This game was over. I don't stop playing till the clock hit zero. That's it."

The Vikings will play at Philadelphia next weekend, after Jacksonville takes on New England for the AFC title. The Super Bowl is in Minnesota two weeks later.

"A heck of a game, wasn't it?" coach Mike Zimmer said. "And the good guys won."

instead of the usual win-or-go-home stakes,Now the Vikings have spun an unprecedented scenario in NFL history. Next weekend, they're in a win-and-go-home situation with the Super Bowl set for Feb. 4 under the reverberating translucent roof of U.S. Bank Stadium.

Brees connected with Michael Thomas for two of his three touchdown passes in a span of 3:09 of the second half. The first score came after a 12-play, 80-yard drive. The second was set up at the Minnesota 40 by an interception by Williams after an off-balance throw by Keenum, his one costly moment of either inexperience or recklessness.

whose breakout was a major factor in the team's NFC South title and breakthrough from three straight 7-9 finishes,When George Johnson blocked Ryan Quigley's punt, rookie Alvin Kamara, the Saints took over at the Vikings 40. Brees saw his 13th career postseason game end in a crushing final moment,Womens Brad Wing Jersey, his 25-for-40 performance for 294 yards tainted a bit by two interceptions before halftime. One came on a leaping grab by safety Andrew Sendejo, the other off a tip by Everson Griffen that landed in Anthony Barr's arms at the Minnesota 10-yard line midway through the third quarter.

The shrewd play calling by offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, culminating with a pitch to Jerick McKinnon for a 14-yard run after a fake jet-sweep

Aided by two pass interference calls on Ken Crawley for 54 yards, the Vikings reachline before settling for a short field goal. They pushed the lead to 17-0 early in the second quarter when Latavius Murray plowed in from the 1-yard line.

The only other time the Saints went scoreless in the first half of a postseason game was five years ago. They fell behind 16-0 at Seattle in the divisional round and lost 23-15 to the eventual Super Bowl champions.

nullSo there was Foles calmly leading the Eagles to two long field-goal drives in the second half, the only points of the half,Authentic Janoris Jenkins Jersey, sending the Eagles to a 15-10 win over the Atlanta Falcons in an NFC Divisional Round playoff game Saturday.

No, Foles didn't light up the scoreboard. But Foles, an efficient running game and a stifling defense were just enough for the Eagles to advance to the NFC Championship game next Sunday. They'll play the winner of the Minnesota-New Orleans game. Those two teams play Sunday.

The victory wasn't secured until cornerback Jalen Mills broke up a fourth-down pass from the Eagles' 2 yard line into the corner of the end zone intended for Julio Jones with 58 seconds left. Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan rolled to his right, stopped, then threw into the back corner of the end zone towards Jones.

No sooner did the Falcons' buses began arriving in Philadelphia for the game did the trash talking between their fans and Eagles' fans begin a few feet away outside their hotel.

The NFL has held 21 games in England over the past 10 years as part of the league's push to globalize a sport that has dominated the athletic landscape in America and remained widely ignored everywhere else. The Eagles are one of six NFL teams who have not yet played overseas.

and they were slated to host Philadelphia this season. So the good news for the Eagles and their fans is that the team won't lose an opportunity to play at Lincoln Financial Field with their trip.,Jacksonville has committed to playing one home game in London each year

The weight of a pessimistic city and its once-promising NFL playoff aspirations now rest on the shoulders of the Philadelphia Eagles’ unexpected leader. Nick Foles wasn’t supposed to be in this position, not when the season had reached such a critical juncture. He was supposed to be waiting in the wings in case he was ever needed. But in truth, no one — certainly not the Eagles — thought he’d be a factor.

Philadelphia’s status as a surefire Super Bowl contender is at the mercy of an unreliable quarterback who has started only three games this season. And the coaching staff that deemed Foles nothing more than a serviceable backup to its rising star,And now, Carson Wentz, now wants its fans and its players to believe Foles is more than capable of seeing this process through.

“My message to Nick is: Listen, we have a great opportunity. Let’s go be Nick. Let’s go play. Let’s go execute the offense,” Coach Doug Pederson said in advance of their NFC divisional-round playoff game against the Atlanta Falcons on Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field.

With Wentz, the second overall pick in the 2016 draft, sent Philly fans spiraling into despair and left the Eagles scrambling to make do with Foles., the Eagles were 11-2 and the clear NFC favorite to reach Super Bowl LII. But a torn knee ligament suffered in Week 14 against the Los Angeles Rams cut short Wentz’s Pro Bowl season

“When I play my best, I just go out there and play, adding that the key to his success lies in “just trusting my instinct.”,” Foles said this week

But the top-seeded Eagles need Foles to do more than “just go out there and play.” They need him to actually make plays, but has not done consistently., something he’s capable of doing

Foles is 2-1 as their starter but averaging only 4.96 yards per pass attempt and completing 54.6 percent of his passes over the past four games. Perhaps more disheartening for fans is the fact that Foles last started a playoff game in 2013.,Since replacing Wentz in the third quarter of their 43-35 win over the Rams

Meanwhile, who has the third-best career postseason passer rating in NFL history (102.4) and guided the franchise to its second Super Bowl appearance last season., the Falcons will counter with quarterback Matt Ryan

Pederson and his staff spent the past two weeks reviewing film of Foles’s past seasons — including his Pro Bowl year in 2013 — in hopes of unleashing the best version of him at the most opportune time.

Foles’s familiarity with the system can’t entirely make up for a lack of meaningful reps. But the Eagles — the No. 1 seed in the NFC for the first time since 2004 — don’t have the luxury of time.

So the 28-year-old will have to rely on what he knows and what he feels most comfortable doing against a Falcons defense that has allowed 13 points or fewer over their past two games and 17 points or fewer in three of their past five contests.

Asked about having time to self-scout, Foles said: “You realize, just go out there and play.’ Maybe I wasn’t doing that as much those games. It’s just as simple as that. Sometimes the hardest things are just the simple things. Basically get out of your own head and go play the game you know how to play.”, ‘Hey

Foles has already proved he can sling it, good games inevitably give way to subpar showings.,Authentic B.J. Goodson Jersey, evidenced by the 27 touchdowns against two interceptions he threw in 2013 when Chip Kelly was the Eagles’ coach. But with Foles

“As much as we and everybody else wants to run the football, you have to be able to stay aggressive in the pass game and get the ball down the field,Womens Aldrick Rosas Jersey,” offensive coordinator Frank Reich said. “Nick has proven that over the length and entirety of his career. He not only can get the ball downfield, as aggressive a guy as I’ve been around.”,Authentic Damon Harrison Jersey, he can do so very well. … He’s aggressive in his mind-set
Caps hand Hurricanes brutal 4-3 loss

The Carolina Hurricanes, were looking for a two-game sweep of the Washington Capitals to please the new boss., with new owner Tom Dundon in the house Friday

The Caps wouldn’t let it happen, handing the Canes what had to be a brutal loss., beating the Canes 4-3 on Jay Beagle’s goal with 1.3 seconds remaining in regulation. Nicklas Backstrom swiped the puck from Canes forward Brock McGinn and found Beagle open for the score

“They all feel similar to me, no points.”,” Canes coach Bill Peters said. “It’s a loss

Jeff Skinner’s third-period goal gave the Canes a 3-2 lead, scoring his 14th of the season on a perfectly placed shot that beat goalie Philipp Grubauer. Forward Lee Stempniak, adidas Martin Jones jersey, assisted on the Skinner score., playing his first game of the season

But the Caps (28-14-3) tied it 3-3 at 16:52 of the third when Brett Connolly scored after Canes defenseman Noah Hanifin made a sloppy pass in the defensive zone that Connolly picked off.

Jordan Staal and Sebastian Aho each had power-play goals for the Canes, who have a game left Sunday against the Calgary Flames before taking their mandated five-day break.

Steal was bloodied by a high stick from the Caps’ Evgeny Kuznetsov with 32 seconds remaining in regulation, but there was no call. It would have been a four-minute double minor that would have carried over into overtime had the Canes not scored in regulation.

"It was a stick in the face in front of (the ref) and he chose not to call it,adidas Brent Burns jersey,” Staal said.

Staal said there was no explanation from the ref, "He didn't want to talk to me tonight.", saying

Lars Eller had a first-period goal and Alex Ovechkin a second-period score for the Caps, adidas Alex Pietrangelo jersey, the Metropolitan Division leaders.

The Canes (20-16-8) had the fans roaring early with their first power-play goal — and a textbook one, at that.

Steal won a faceoff, making him the fourth player from the 2006 NHL draft class to reach that milestone., Aho got the puck low to Justin Williams and Williams promptly found Staal in front for the score. It was Staal’s 200th career goal

in the second period, adidas Vladimir Tarasenko jersey,The Canes’ second-power play goal, was scored as quickly as the first. Aho was open at the top of the slot and unloaded a shot that Grubauer couldn’t track as the Canes tied the score 1-1.

Sergei Bobrovsky was not selected for his third NHL All-Star Game on Wednesday, as the Washington Capitals’ Braden Holtby and New York Rangers’ Henrik Lunqvist were instead chosen as the two goalies for the Metropolitan Division.

Bobrovsky, and Lundqvist, adidas Carter Hutton jersey, has produced statistics that compare favorably to Holtby, a two-time Vezina Trophy winner (2012-13 and 2016-17), who was chosen for the third time, a four-time pick.

Defenseman Seth Jones was the only Blue Jackets player selected for this year’s All-Star Game. The New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers and Carolina Hurricanes will have one representative there, the New Jersey Devils, Pittsburgh Penguins and division-leading Capitals each had two players picked. Like the Jackets, New York Rangers, barring injury or a player deciding to withdraw.

“It’s such a unique position in professional sports. There’s so much pressure that goes into that position. And we’ve got one of the best.”

he was “devastated” by not getting to represent the Jackets in their home arena. Bobrovsky made his All-Star debut last season in Staples Center in Los Angeles,Bobrovsky was first named an All-Star in 2015 but was unable to participate in that year’s game at Nationwide Arena because of injury. According to team officials, making 16 saves in two games to help the Metro win the tournament.

Left wing Artemi Panarin and defenseman Zach Werenski also were not selected this year despite strong statistics.

Panarin leads the Blue Jackets in assists (25) and points (36). His 11th goal of the season was the game-winner in Monday’s 3-2 overtime win at Toronto. His assists are tied for fourth-most among NHL left wings and his points are eighth most.

deeper pockets and a highly-charged competitive environment lead easily to thoughts of player acquisitions. But,Fans see a billionaire and visions of high-priced free agents dance in their heads. That’s a natural and human reaction. The infusion of new blood, ownership is more important than how much money the big boss has.

then the New York Knicks or Cleveland Browns or Washington Redskins would win all the time. Here’s the truth, with few exceptions,If it was just about money, those fortunate enough to own major league sports franchises are ALL wealthier than we could ever imagine. What sets the great owners apart from the rest is the ability to surround themselves with high-character people and provide the resources that will allow them to do the jobs they were trained to do.

you can’t achieve sustained success without great ownership. And,Authentic Martin Jones jersey,There is one common thread in all successful major league sports franchises. With very few exceptions, it matters not how your wealth was built nor how you acquired your stake in the team.

Robert Kraft is the best owner in sports. Not because he’s a multi-billionaire, Authentic Alex Pietrangelo jersey, but because he’s smart enough to allow his employees to do the job he pays them to do. Has there been a franchise in sports that’s enjoyed a longer run of dominance than the New England Patriots over the last two decades?

James Dolan has essentially the same net worth as does Kraft. But,Authentic Brent Burns jersey, pompous, impatient fool who’s turned the New York Knicks into a punchline. The difference between the two is about how they treat people, both their customers as well as their employees. For decades,Authentic Jake Allen jersey, George Steinbrenner was a terrible owner of the New York Yankees. Yes, Dolan is a meddling, they won back-to-back World Series in 1977-78, but they essentially jumped into free agency with both feet long before anyone else. Once that started to even out around baseball,Authentic Carter Hutton jersey, Steinbrenner’s bombast and interfering only served to get in his team’s way.

Only after he was suspended for a time and forced to cede control of the Yankees did The Boss eventually learn those valuable lessons. The second stage of Steinbrenner’s tenure was filled with compassion for players and confidence in those he hired to run his team. It’s not in any way accidental that his greatest run of sustained success coincided with his decision to start listening to those better-suited to build his teams on the field.

his passion,Authentic Vladimir Tarasenko jersey,That’s not to say that all great owners just shut up and sign the checks. Everyone has a different style of leadership. Dundon is, more hands-on. Those that know him talk of his energy, by all accounts, adidas Jake Allen jersey, his instincts and his drive to be the best. He’s talked extensively about taking this franchise to the next level.

isn't nearly as difficult as staying there. Owners named Kraft and Rooney and DeBartolo and Buss were all very different people,I would point out that the Hurricanes have been to that level before. The only problem was that those ended up being mere visits, it turns out, no matter how euphoric the runs in 2002 and 2006 might have been. Getting there, but they all built championship organizations that stood the test of time and defined their era.

if you will — when the Blues finished a brutal December schedule that featured 16 games in 31 days,There was a general sense of relief — a collective exhale, including five sets of back-to-back contests.

But guess what? The NHL schedule-makers weren’t quite done throwing hurdles at the Blues. When the Blues face the Florida Panthers at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Scottrade Center, it will be their fifth game in eight days.

it marked their sixth set of back-to-back contests in 37 days. While the Capitals had been resting at home since Tuesday, eating bonbons and catching up on all the news headlines in the nation’s capital,When they faced the Washington Capitals on Sunday, the Blues were playing their third game in four days at Capital One Arena.

So maybe it was fresher legs that helped Washington outshoot the Blues 18-8 in the third period en route to a 4-3 overtime victory.

” forward Paul Stastny said. “Everyone’s kind of beat up,“We’ve played a lot of hockey lately, a little tired. Wear and tear.”

five teams will have played 44 games. Nine teams will have played 43. And 16 teams — just over half the league — will have played either 40, 41,Florida marks the Blues’ league-high 46th game of the season. By the end of Tuesday’s play, or 42 games.

The Blues will have played six more games than Vegas, the New York Rangers and Colorado. Compared to those teams, and five more games than Ottawa, Boston and San Jose, the Blues will have squeezed in roughly two weeks’ worth of extra hockey — under normal scheduling — before they head into their open week., Detroit, New Jersey

To say it has been a grind would be an understatement, particularly considering the number of injuries the team has dealt with — 188 man-games lost entering the Florida contest.

“We’ve played a lot of hockey,” goalie Carter Hutton said. “I don’t know how you end up that many games ahead of everybody. It seems kind of odd. Hopefully our schedule will lighten up after the break.”

the Blues will be off for five days,It does. Following the Panthers game, return to practice Jan. 15 and then return to game action Jan. 16 in Toronto. They also go four days between games at the end of the month during the NHL All-Star game break.

Buffalo Bills name Alabama's Brian Daboll, their offensive coordinator, a UR graduate

however,That journey could be heading toward a conclusion,Womens Ben Roethlisberger Jersey, according to national reports.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Saturday morning Indianapolis' process is down to two finalists with ties to the rival Patriots — Josh McDaniels and Mike Vrabel. The MMQB's Albert Breer later confirmed that report and added the team still could bring in another candidate.

The finalists were part of an interview group that included former Seahawks defensive coordinator Kris Richard and former Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy — who was named the Bears' head coach Monday.

who pulled his name out of contention,The Colts also interviewed Baylor head coach Matt Rhule, and Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks declined an interview request.

The timeframe never has been an issue for Ballard, who claimed from the outset the search would last as long as necessary.

and we’re going to make sure,"We’re going to take our time," Ballard said. "I think it’s one of the good things that a lot of great teams do in this league is they take their time. You want to make sure it’s the right fit.

"We want a partner, look, and, the head coach-GM relationship is one of the most important things for the success of this franchise. So we want to make sure we get the right fit for this organization."

Ballard has put no limits on the process, and the apparent finalists come from opposite ends of the spectrum.

spent nearly two seasons as head coach of the Broncos,McDaniels, compiling an 11-17 overall record. He's also in his second stint as the offensive coordinator in New England, 41, having served in that role from 2006-08 and returning in 2012 after his experience in Denver.

Vrabel, played 14 seasons as an outside linebacker in the NFL, 42, including eight with the Patriots from 2001-08. He just completed his first season as the defensive coordinator for the Texans after serving as the team's linebackers coach from 2014-16.

McDaniels offers an experienced option with hard lessons presumably learned from his first stint in a top job. But he has yet to prove himself outside of Patriots head coach Bill Belichick's shadow.

His situation also is complicated by New England's playoff run. The Colts — or any other team — can't officially hire McDaniels until the Patriots are eliminated from the postseason.

Vrabel is widely considered to be a head-coach-in-waiting, but he might not have made enough contacts to be able to surround himself with a strong staff of assistants.

Both candidates also have other suitors. McDaniels reportedly is a finalist for the Giants' head-coaching job, and Vrabel reportedly is still in the running with the Lions.

The Colts reportedly have yet to make an offer to any candidate and have left the door open for a wild-card entry still be added to the mix.

“I love the resiliency and the toughness of this team,” Quinn said.

“When you’ve been through some of the fire together and you come out the other side stronger as a brotherhood, we’re certainly improved.”

this game could turn into a shootout. The Falcons led the NFL in scoring last season,Although both defenses are statistically solid, but the Rams took over the top spot this year in McVay’s worst-to-first revitalization of the L.A. offense.

Ryan and Jones have the skills to pick at the Rams’ secondary if Donald can’t be disruptive, while Goff and the versatile Gurley are eager to make their first mark on postseason football.

the Rams seriously lack experience: Just six of their players have been in postseason games — including star left tackle Andrew Whitworth,While the Falcons know everything about playoff pressure, who went 0-6 in Cincinnati. McVay also is the youngest head coach in a playoff game in NFL history.

“That’s really not an excuse for us,” said Whitworth, who cited the Rams’ series of games against playoff-bound teams down the regular-season stretch as good experience under pressure.

About the only thing the Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Rams have in common entering their NFC playoff game on Saturday is both teams used victories in Seattle to propel them toward the postseason.

The Falcons (10-6) are still working to take the sting out of the meltdown in last year’s Super Bowl loss to the New England Patriots. Veteran quarterback Matt Ryan leads a once-prolific offense that has struggled to find consistency under new coordinator Steve Sarkisian.

The Rams (11-5) are the new kids on the playoff block, led by 31-year-old coach Sean McVay, who turned second-year quarterback Jared Goff from a bust into a solid starting NFL quarterback over the course of one offseason. In fact, Los Angeles resembles the Atlanta attack of last season, as the Rams led the NFL with an average of 29.9 points per game during the regular season.

The juxtaposition of the two franchises makes for an interesting storyline as the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is expecting 70,000 fans for the first NFL playoff game at the stadium in 40 years. Heightening the drama is the 8:15 p.m. (NBC) primetime start.

The Falcons have been answering questions about the 25-point blown lead against the Patriots for 11 months, but they nearly didn’t get the opportunity to see the playoff stage for the second consecutive year.

Atlanta needed a victory against the Carolina Panthers last week to secure the final NFC playoff berth and officially knock the Seahawks out of contention. If not for an inconsequential missed field goal at the end of the Seahawks’ game on Sunday, it would have been the Falcons’ three-point victory in Seattle on Nov. 20 that would have proved the tiebreaker.

In some respects, the Falcons could now been seen as playing with house money. They were the third NFC South team to make the field, and they enter the playoffs with very modest expectations nationally — even as the only team in the conference to return to the postseason from last season.

“I love the resiliency and the toughness of this team,” Falcons coach Dan Quinn said. “When you’ve been through some of the fire together, you come out the other side stronger as a brotherhood.”

The Rams have the youngest team in the league, which can be a Catch-22. Postseason experience can be invaluable during the pivotal moments of a playoff game, but Los Angeles is also not burdened by the ghosts of playoffs past.

The young Rams served notice of their immense potential with a 42-7 shellacking of the Seahawks — who had won the NFC West three of the previous four years — in Seattle two weeks ago. Atlanta enters Saturday with 141 combined games of playoff experience on its roster. Los Angeles? Just 21.

“I don’t think it is a concern,” McVay said. “When I say that, I have a whole lot of respect for experience and what that does and the value that it provides. But I do think that we’ve got a confident group, a mature group for a young football team.”

The Falcons have won the past four meetings, the most recent being a 42-14 victory in 2016. But these are two vastly different teams now.

Raiders legends share excitement over Jon Gruden’s return

“The one thing I loved about Jon is when we stepped on the field, we lost,” Brown said. “We got beat physically, we knew we were prepared. If we lost, but it wasn’t because we had a bad game plan or we didn’t have a clue what was gonna happen. As a player,Authentic Jadeveon Clowney Jersey, that’s all you can ask for. Make sure that we’re well-prepared.”

Brown also thinks Gruden will be able to get the most out of underachieving players on the team, Cooper took a step back in 2017 by registering just 48 catches for 680 yards and seven touchdowns. With Gruden implementing a new offense, such as receiver Amari Cooper. After making the Pro Bowl in the first two years of his NFL career, Brown said Cooper could more than double those totals from last season.

“I think for Amari,Authentic Duane Brow Jersey, this is going to be an incredible opportunity for him to get 120-125 catches a year with no problems.”

Long doesn’t see that affecting him in any way given his involvement with the game over the years through broadcasting gig. The passion is also something Long believes still exists with Gruden,While Gruden has been away from coaching for ten years, as much now at the age of 54 as when he got his first head coaching job at 34.

if you’re not looking with an eye towards a day like today,“I don’t think Jon’s lifestyle in terms of his commitment to learning and growing and being enthusiastic about the game has changed. He goes through the draft every year and evaluates talent. Every week he’s visiting two teams and watching how they practice and how they meet. Typically when someone’s in broadcasting and gets away from it,Womens Whitney Mercilus Jersey, you can take a step back. But I think Jon is more than ready.”

Long said Gruden doesn’t fake his personality. He is real,While an energetic personality similar to Gruden’s runs the risk of eventually wearing thin in some locker rooms, and players will recognize it.

in terms of enthusiasm in the building. That’s the thing that’s probably the most appealing about Jon is that he’s like that,“I think it’s like a 4.9 on the richter scale,” Long said. “What doesn’t change with players is they want to be great and they want to be led. They want to believe the guy that is in front of the room. Players see right through you if you’re not authentic. Jon is authentic.”

At least one member of the Oakland Raiders offense already has said how excited he is to have Jon Gruden as the team’s new head coach.

It has long been speculated that the Giants are the only other organization the 65-year-old Belichick would coach. It's well-documented that he has a soft spot for the franchise that launched his career with two Super Bowls as defensive coordinator.

So, it's not surprising that a source close to Belichick told the Daily News that "the Giants are the only place he wants to be" if he leaves New England. But one passage in the report should pump the brakes on the to hysteria: "The source has not spoken to Belichick since the story came out."

If the source hasn't spoken to Belichick since the explosive story was published, then when did these conversations take place and how serious were they? When the source says Belichick sees "an opening to get to the Giants" that comes across as far more speculative knowing that the source hasn't been in touch with the five-time Super Bowl champion since the story broke.

Most Patriots beat reporters spent Friday discrediting parts of the piece and downplaying the possibility that this will be the final season of Belichick and Brady in New England. Even if this is the end, it likely wouldn't be a smooth transaction with Belichick walking away to take over the Giants.

assuming Belichick is under contract,No one knows the details of Belichick's contract, it would cost a boatload to acquire him , but it's difficult to imagine Kraft ever letting the coach enter the final year of a deal to avoid this type of situation. So, with the Patriots' demands undoubtedly starting with the Giants' No. 2 pick .

the Raiders traded coach Jon Gruden to the Buccaneers for two first-round picks,n 2002, two second-round picks and $8 million in cash. That would likely be the baseline for the Patriots in any negotiations involving the far more accomplished Belichick.

Massachusetts,There are other roadblocks on Belichick's potential path back to East Rutherford. While Giants co-owner John Mara, to interview Patriots coordinators Josh McDaniels and Matt Patricia on Friday , general manager Dave Gettleman and assistant general manager Kevin Abrams were in Foxboro,Authentic Will Fuller V Jersey, tampering rules prevented the Giants' brass from contacting Belichick about their opening.

surely the Giants would be able to gauge Belichick's interest through back channels. But without a locked-in commitment from Belichick's camp,Now, Authentic Whitney Mercilus Jersey, the Giants would be taking a major risk to wait until after the Patriots' playoff run to pursue the coach.

In the interim,Womens DeAndre Hopkins Jersey, like McDaniels and Patricia, the top attainable candidates, will likely come to agreements with other teams. The Giants could be left in desperation mode if they wait for Belichick and he ultimately decides to stay in New England or retire.

Gettleman's presence adds another variable to the equation. The 66-year-old didn't come to the Giants a week ago to be a puppet. But Belichick has had the final say over the roster throughout his time in New England. Could these strong-willed individuals work something out? Potentially,Womens Will Fuller V Jersey, but it also seems like a recipe for disaster.

he opted instead to stay in the friendly,Womens Jadeveon Clowney Jersey, Jon Gruden had plenty of opportunities to return to an NFL sideline over the past several years. Until Tuesday, and well-compensated, though, confines of ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” broadcast booth.

What pulled him back after nine years away from the game was not the lucrative contract offer of the Oakland Raiders,Womens Duane Brow Jersey, but rather, he says, unfinished business as the team’s head coach.

“Yeah,” Gruden said Tuesday at his introductory news conference,Authentic Nick Martin Jersey, again taking the reins of a team that traded him away in 2002, there is unfinished business, four years after giving him his first head coaching job. “As a coach, I’ve been traded. I’ve been fired. I’ve missed the game terribly.

“But I’ve really missed the Raiders. For my career [here] to end on that night in New England,Authentic Braxton Miller Jersey, it still ticks me off.”

the Raiders made the rare move of trading away Gruden to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,Gruden is referring to the 2001 AFC division playoff game between the Raiders and New England Patriots – a now legendary game played on a snow-covered field that began Tom Brady and Bill Belichick‘s historic run of five championships with the Patriots. After that season, with whom he won Super Bowl in his first season.

likely for the 2020 season,After agreeing to a massive $100 million contract that spans 10 years, pending the completion of a new stadium. Still, Gruden will now have a chance to write a new ending with the Raiders. He will also help author the beginning of the team’s time in Las Vegas when it relocates there, Gruden said it was his love for the city of Oakland that helped bring him back.

” Gruden said. “I had a son here. Some of my great memories of my life are in Oakland,“I love the city of Oakland, and I want to give them two of the best years of football that I can possibly help deliver.”

Gruden was introduced while sitting alongside team owner Mark Davis, with over 100 media members in attendance along with more than two dozen franchise legends, including Howie Long, who said he had pursued Gruden for six years and called this “the biggest day of my life.” On Gruden’s other side sat Raiders General Manager Reggie McKenzie, Tom Flores, Charles Woodson and Tim Brown.

McKenzie’s presence answered one question about Gruden’s return to the franchise – specifically, as expected, who will be working alongside Gruden in Oakland’s front office. Gruden answered another when he confirmed that he, would be calling plays for the Raiders next season.

Many other questions remain, however. Gruden himself pointed out several times during the half-hour news conference that he has “a lot to prove” after spending the last nine years outside of the game – an odd admission from a man who was just given a decade-long contract with an annual eight-figure salary.

“I have not coached since 2008,” Gruden said. “I haven’t won a game since 2008.

it’s about the tempo we establish as a coaching staff. With that said,“I’ve got to hire a great coaching staff. . . . It’s about the people, I have a lot to prove, it’s about the staff, and I know that.”

Gruden officially announced his selections for the team’s coordinator positions, tapping Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks coach Greg Olson as his offensive coordinator and installing Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Paul Guenther and Dallas Cowboys special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia in those same roles in Oakland.
Gruden welcomed back to Raiders 16 years after departure
The Raiders nearly got there in Gruden's first stint from 1998-2001 but the team lost to Baltimore in the 2000 AFC title game and followed that with the memorable loss in the snow against the Patriots that still haunts the franchise.

Gruden was then traded to Tampa Bay the following month for four draft picks and $8 million. He beat Oakland in the Super Bowl the next season but always identified with the Raiders.

it still ticks me off,"For my career to end that night in New England," Gruden said. "I'm so thrilled to be back here. I hope people understand the emotion inside. I feel there's unfinished business. I also feel a lot of loyalty and I feel a lot of responsibility to get the Raiders going again. It's been a while since we consistently performed at a high level. That's all I care about.

"I'm going to do everything I can to help this team get right again."

Davis said he had been trying to bring Gruden back for six years ever since taking over the franchise following his father's death. He said he thought he had been close four times before and the opportunity was finally right this year after more than a dozen cross-country recruiting trips to Tampa, Florida.

Davis said he first got an inkling Gruden might be ready to return when he met with him during the season when the Raiders spent a week in Florida to talk about how to fix a team that was struggling after winning 12 games a year ago under Jack Del Rio.

who had that role in Carr's rookie season in 2014,Gruden said he hopes the familiarity with new offensive coordinator Greg Olsen, will help Carr bounce back after regressing this season from the form that made him an MVP candidate in 2016.

” Gruden said Tuesday at his introductory news conference as Raiders head coach, just after joking,“There is unfinished business, “Thanks for bringing up the tuck rule and for reminding me how old we are.”

snowy January night in New England in 2002, Gruden’s first turn in the position to which he is returning ended in a gut-wrenching way — a fumble by Patriots quarterback Tom Brady that officials overturned and deemed an incomplete pass under the NFL’s obscure “tuck rule.” It was a controversial play that cost the Raiders a playoff victory,Authentic Noah Spence Jersey,On a bitter, launched a New England dynasty and has haunted the Raiders ever since.

It's official! Chargers are giving former Bucs kicker Roberto Aguayo a shot

The Los Angeles Chargers have officially signed Roberto Aguayo to a reserve/future contract which means he’ll have another opportunity to make a comeback after failing to live up to expectations with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chicago Bears.

The Bucs originally selected Aguayo in the second-round of the 2016 NFL draft, and even traded up for the former Florida State product, making him the highest-drafted kicker since Mike Nugent in 2005.

Aguayo spent time with the Bears and Panthers this season,However, the young kicker unfortunately missed nine of his 31 field goal attempts with the Buccaneers which resulted in him being waived by the team. After his time in Tampa Bay, but was released from both teams.

the star-studded running back that finished second in the NFL in rushing yards behind Adrian Peterson,Martin finished the season with just 138 carries for 406 yards, averaging 2.9 yards per carry. The Buccaneers were truly banking on Martin returning to his 2015 form, but instead he wasn’t able to bounce back and live up to his potential and the running game wasn’t very productive at all this season.

but he can be cut without cap penalty. Considering Peyton Barber’s success at running back this season,As a result, the franchise will have to work on determining whether or not they should retain or part ways with him this offseason. Martin is slated to make $6.75 million in 2018, it seems it might be a wise choice to say move on from Martin this offseason and search for an explosive back that can lead this running game to new heights in 2018.

Davis said there would be no pressure on Gruden to win immediately, though he has said in the past that he wants to win a Super Bowl before leaving Oakland. The owner said the Raiders have a strong leadership now,Womens Noah Spence Jersey, while crediting Del Rio for getting the team moving in the right direction.

"I just,Womens Roberto Aguayo Jersey, and I am all-in. I only live one time. This is something I feel deeply, in my heart, I feel this is the thing to do, strongly about,"  said. "This is what I want to do. This is the organization that I want to be a part of,Womens Donovan Smith Jersey, and I am going to do everything I can to hire a great coaching staff and put the Raiders back on track."

Gruden said he has hired an offensive coordinator (Greg Olson), a defensive coordinator (Paul Guenther) and a special-teams coordinator (Rich Bisaccia).

"Somebody asked me what was harder, getting the 31 votes to move to Las Vegas or getting Jon Gruden?" Davis said. "And by far, to get Jon Gruden was the toughest."

In another move,Authentic Donovan Smith Jersey, is leaving his job with uncle Jay Gruden and the Washington Redskins to join his father in Oakland,Authentic J.J. Watt Jersey, Gruden's son, Deuce Gruden, according to the San Jose Mercury News. Deuce Gruden has been with the Redskins' strength and conditioning staff since the 2016 season, serving first as an intern and then as a full-time coach.

Hall of Famers Jerry Rice, Howie Long, and Tim Brown were in town to offer their greetings.

Fans outfitted in Raiders regalia waited outside the team’s headquarters,Womens J.J. Watt Jersey, hoping for a peek at the returning savior.

A horde of news reporters and camera operators hung on every word during a news conference held at the Raiders’ cavernous workout facility instead of the usual auditorium to accommodate the media’s massive presence.

How could Jon Gruden not be pumped about taking over as the Raiders’ coach again?

repeatedly expressing his love for Oakland and the Raiders and saying,And indeed, Gruden displayed both charm and enthusiasm, “I’m thrilled to be back. I have a great opportunity and I plan on doing everything I can with this opportunity. Let’s go.’’

The question is how long that excitement can last, and whether the 54-year-old Gruden can once again summon the intense drive and unflagging commitment he showed during his first Raiders stint while in his mid-30s.

Gruden is back on the sidelines,Womens Ali Marpet Jersey, taking one of the most demanding jobs in all of sports after nine years spent in the relative comfort of a TV analyst’s gig, where the outcome of a game had virtually no impact on his job or quality of life.

How difficult will it be to recapture that passion?

who played for Gruden in 2001 before retiring in 2004. “Just listening to him talk – and I’ve been out of the game for a long time – I wanted to suit up. He can get you going. But the thing too is he’s so smart about the game of football,“It’s not difficult,’’ said Rice, he’s going to know the buttons to push.’’

Lured back to the sidelines by a 10-year contract reported to be worth $100 million, Gruden takes over a team that went a disappointing 6-10 after entering the season with legitimate Super Bowl aspirations.

The year before, the Raiders had gone 12-4 and made the playoffs for the first time since 2002 as up-and-coming quarterback Derek Carr finished third in the MVP voting. But Carr regressed in 2017, his quarterback rating dipping from 96.7 to 86.4 and his interceptions more than doubling from six to 13.

he’s in his prime. He’s healthy now. He’s been in a lot of different systems,“He has a great arm talent. He’s athletic. He’s got natural leadership skills, who threw for 22 touchdowns. “He’s young,’’ Gruden said of Carr, he’s played for a number of quarterbacks (coaches). There has not been a lot of continuity around him that way. I think he’s got huge upside.’’

Referee Jeff Triplette reportedly retiring after questionable performance

but the early game between the Titans and Chiefs was marred by some horrendous officiating. The primary culprit? Head official Jeff Triplette,Saturday afternoon featured some very fun NFL playoff football, who repeatedly bumbled calls on the mic after repeatedly blowing plays dead early and lacking control over the game in general.

eventually lost the football,There was also a sack of Mariota during a Titans' two-point conversion attempt where Mariota attempted to escape,Womens Jack Conklin Jersey, and the Chiefs recovered. Kansas City was going to score on the play and it would have been worth two points.

"The defender hit him and he was driving him back,Womens Kevin Dodd Jersey," Triplette responded.

Patricia would head to New York with extensive experience as an assistant with the Patriots. He was an offensive assistant in 2004,Womens Austin Johnson Jersey, a linebackers coach from 2006 through 2010, an offensive line coach in 2005, a safeties coach in 2011 and has been the defensive coordinator since 2012.

While New England was a mere 29th in the league this season in yards allowed, it was a formidable fifth in scoring defense. Leonard noted the Patriots have finished in the top 10 in scoring defense in 11 of the 12 seasons since Patricia moved to the defensive staff.

wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Brandon Marshall figure to return after season-ending ankle injuries,There are questions about Eli Manning's future with the Giants since he is 37 years old and was benched for a game this season for the first time since he was a rookie in 2004. However,Womens Kevin Byard Jersey, and rookie tight end Evan Engram impressed in 2017 with 722 receiving yards and six touchdown catches.

If Patricia can make those offensive pieces work and bring his defensive expertise to the other side of the ball, he can have New York in the playoffs for just the second time since it won the Super Bowl in the 2011 season.

Murray's absence means Derrick Henry will see a vast majority of the carries for Tennessee, who won the Heisman Trophy following the 2015 season, rushed for 156 yards and a score on 23 carries. The big,Womens Sean Taylor Jersey, which knocked off Kansas City 22-21 last week thanks in large part to Henry's performance. The second-year back out of Alabama, bruising back—listed at 6'3'', 247 pounds—broke off a 22-yard run on third-and-10 with 1:53 remaining that clinched come-from-behind victory for Tennessee.

Meanwhile, prior to Saturday the Titans had overcome a 14-point deficit once in the Marcus Mariota era: Week 15 of the 2016 season. Any guesses on who they were playing?

the Chiefs,Yep, who led 14-0 in the first quarter and ended up losing 19-17 on a last-second Ryan Succop 53-yard field goal.

There was no need for Succop this time because Mariota, put the team on his back. And when he needed a break, who had battled injuries and inconsistency for much of the season, running back Derrick Henry took over and the two took turns demoralizing the Chiefs until time expired.

It was an impressive effort by a team many folks — us included — counted out long before kickoff. But their are several lessons here: 1) Never underestimate Andy Reid's ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, they're hard to stop and 3) Defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau may be 80 years old but he remains as engaged as ever. After a slow start, 2) When Mariota and the Titans' running game is on, the Titans' defense shut down an explosive Chiefs' offense.

The Titans and Chiefs face off Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium for the right to play in the divisional round. Tennessee’s struggling offense has been the story of their season, but now they get to play their biggest game of the year against one of the league’s worst defensive units.

Finding that explosive element of the Titans offense has been tough all year. They’ve only scored more than 30 points three times this year, and they haven’t done it since Week 6. Getting to that 30-point range may be necessary to beat this Chiefs team.

These are our three keys to the Titans lighting up the scoreboard enough times to pull the dramatic upset.

One Titans fan got the surprise of a lifetime when his brother gave him playoff tickets.

Dylan Woods decided that for his brother Cody’s graduation from boot camp he would buy him tickets to the Titans Chiefs game in Kansas City. The moment was caught on video by their parents.

Dylan told News 2 his brother is a diehard Titans fan and a trip to the playoffs together would make for a special trip.

‘Do you not know what I have right here?’ and I made him look back down and then he finally realized that we were going to the game,“He didn’t have his glasses on and he didn’t know what it was. I said,Authentic Kevin Dodd Jersey,” Dylan said.

“I didn’t even think he was going to come to basic training for graduation then all of a sudden he showed up and he said we are going to the game and I can’t believe it,Authentic Derrick Henry Jersey,” Cody Woods said.

This is not the first time the brothers have bought tickets for each other. During the NHL playoffs, Cody bought tickets to one of the games for Dylan.

he impressed against the Chiefs,Authentic Sean Taylor Jersey,The Titans rallied late last week against the Chiefs to earn a date against the Patriots. Though Mariota struggled during the regular season, and Belichick expects that to carry over against the Patriots.

coach,"We expect to get everybody’s best every week and we’re certainly going to get everybody’s best in the playoffs, scheme — there’s nothing to save it for. So,Womens Derrick Henry Jersey," Belichick said. "There’s nothing to save it for. It’s a one-game season. Whatever you’ve got at this point in any capacity you have it — player, everybody’s going to do their best and put their best out there.
